# How to Do Category Page SEO? 12 Steps to Rank Your E-Commerce Category Pages Higher

> How do you do category page SEO? A 12-step guide covering keyword, title, category description, filters and pagination, internal links and out-of-stock products.

A customer often does not type the exact name of a specific product into a search engine; they search for a product type such as "men's linen shirt", "wooden toy for kids" or "wireless headphones". The answer to these searches is not a product page but a category page. Yet on many e-commerce sites, category pages are nothing more than a product grid: a template title, a page with no description and hundreds of duplicate URLs generated by filters.

In this guide we cover **category page SEO** from start to finish: why a category page is the most valuable page in e-commerce SEO, which search belongs to a category and which to a product, how to structure categories, the 12 steps that take a category page to the top of the results, how to manage filter and pagination URLs, how to write a category description and the common mistakes.

Key Takeaway

“Product pages come and go, category pages stay. Over the years, search value builds up most on category pages; they need to be more than a product list.”

## What Is a Category Page and Why Does It Matter for SEO?

A category page is the page on an e-commerce site where products of the same type are listed. It matters for SEO because it is the best match for product-type searches (for example "women's sneakers"); these searches reach far more people than product-name searches, and the category page sits at the center of the site's internal link structure.

- **It meets broader searches:** A product page describes a single product; a category page presents all the options for a need.
- **It is permanent:** Products go out of stock and seasons end; a category page stays at the same URL for years and accumulates value.
- **It is a link hub:** Most links coming from the home page, the menu and blog posts go to categories; the category then passes this value on to products.
- **It catches customers who are comparing:** A customer who has not yet decided which product to buy looks through the options on the category page.
- **It gives new products a boost:** Until a newly added product earns rankings on its own, a link from a strong category page speeds up its discovery and indexing.

## Which Search Goes to a Category Page and Which to a Product Page?

General searches that describe a product type, feature or purpose should lead to a category page; searches that include the name, model or code of a specific product should lead to a product page. Searches looking for information are the job of blog and guide content.

| Search example | Search intent | Right page |
| --- | --- | --- |
| "men's linen shirt" | Viewing the options | Category page |
| "white short-sleeve linen shirt" | Narrowed-down options | Subcategory or an indexed filter page |
| Name and model of a specific product | Buying that product | Product page |
| "how to iron a linen shirt" | Getting information | Blog post |

The easiest way to understand search intent is to search for the phrase you are targeting and look at the pages in the top results: if most of the results are category pages, a category page should be prepared for that phrase too.

Targeting the same search with two pages makes the two pages compete with each other. Choose a single main search phrase for each category and do not give the same phrase to another category or a blog post.

## What Should the Category Structure and URL Look Like?

An SEO-friendly category structure requires a logical hierarchy reachable within three clicks of the home page, short and meaningful URLs, and a breadcrumb trail shown on every page.

*Görsel: SEO-friendly category structure: main category, subcategory and product hierarchy, short category URL and content map (Category structure: shallow hierarchy, short URL and a breadcrumb on every page.)*

- **Shallow hierarchy:** Main category › subcategory › product. If five or six levels must be descended to reach products, both the customer and the search engine lose the way.
- **Short, meaningful URL:** Use short URLs that contain the key phrase, such as "/mens-linen-shirt", without special characters; do not add dates, codes or unnecessary words to URLs.
- **Breadcrumb:** A path such as "Home › Men › Shirts" shows the customer where they are and shows the search engine how pages relate to each other.
- **Permanent URLs:** Do not change the URL even if the category name changes; if you have to change it, redirect the old URL to the new one permanently (301).

## How to Do Category Page SEO? 12 Steps

Category page SEO is done by choosing the right key phrase, writing the page title, meta description and H1 heading around that phrase, adding an original category description, making the product list crawlable, managing filter and pagination URLs, building internal links, improving images and speed, adding structured data, and handling out-of-stock products and empty categories correctly.

*Görsel: Anatomy of an SEO-friendly category page: content map, H1 heading, short top description, filters, subcategory links, product grid, pagination and a detailed category description in the lower section (Sections of an SEO-friendly category page.)*

### 1. Choose the Key Phrase

For each category, choose the product-type phrase people actually search for: instead of "shirt", "men's shirt" or "linen shirt" is often the better target. Name the category with the words customers use as far as possible; avoid internal jargon ("Collection A").

### 2. Write the Page Title (Title)

The title should start with the key phrase and briefly say what the page offers: such as "Men's Linen Shirt Styles and Prices | Store Name". Instead of using the same template title for all categories, write each category its own title.

### 3. Write the Meta Description

The meta description does not directly affect rankings, but it determines whether you get clicked in the search result. Describe the options in the category, the standout advantage (e.g. fast shipping, easy returns) and the key phrase in a natural sentence.

### 4. Use a Single, Clear H1

The main heading at the top of the page (H1) should carry the category name and the key phrase, and there should be only one on the page. The logo, campaign banner or filter headings should not be marked up as H1.

### 5. Add an Original Category Description

Put a short intro of one or two sentences above the product list and a more detailed description below it. The description should explain the product types in the category, how to choose, and frequently asked questions. We explain how to write it in a separate section below.

### 6. Make the Product List Crawlable

Product cards, product names and links should be present in the page's source code; lists that only load as you scroll and that the search engine cannot see prevent link value from flowing to products. If you use infinite scroll, each page should also have a separately reachable URL.

### 7. Set Up Pagination Correctly

In categories with many products, each of the second, third and later pages should have its own URL and carry a canonical tag pointing to itself. Setting the canonical of all pages to the first page makes it harder for the products on the second page to be discovered.

### 8. Manage Filter URLs

Color, size, price and brand filters can generate a new URL for every combination, which means thousands of similar pages. Leave a few filters that have search value (for example brand + category) open to indexing and tie the rest to the main category with a canonical tag. Details below.

### 9. Build Internal Links

Link from the category page to subcategories and related categories, and from related blog posts to the category page using the key phrase. Categories in the menu receive links from every page of the site, so they are the strongest categories; arrange the menu accordingly. Having a link from product pages back to the parent category as well lets value flow in both directions.

### 10. Improve Images and Speed

A category page contains dozens of product images; images should be reduced to the size at which they are displayed, compressed in modern formats, and those below the fold should be loaded lazily. The alt text of product images should carry the product name.

### 11. Add Structured Data

Breadcrumb (BreadcrumbList) structured data shows the page's path in the search result. If there are frequently asked questions under the category description, you can mark them up with structured data as well.

### 12. Manage Out-of-Stock Products and Empty Categories

Instead of deleting a product that has run out of stock, move it to the end of the list; the product stays live and its URL is preserved. If you are permanently removing the product from sale, redirect its URL to the closest product or its category. Merge categories that have no products or only a few products ("thin" categories), and redirect the old URL to the new category.

Tip

Start with the best-selling categories

Do not try to edit all categories at once. Start with the five or ten categories that bring the most traffic and revenue; complete the title, description and internal links on them first, watch the result for a few weeks, then move on to the others.

## How Are Filter and Pagination URLs Managed in SEO?

The basic rule for filter (faceted navigation) URLs: combinations that are searched for on their own and have enough products are left open to indexing and managed with their own title and description; all other combinations are tied to the main category with a canonical tag or are not indexed.

*Görsel: Filter page SEO decision: a flow for indexing or setting a canonical to the main category, based on whether the combination is searched for and whether there are enough products (Should a filter URL be indexed? A two-question decision flow.)*

| Filter combination (example) | Recommended approach | Why? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Category + brand | Open to indexing, with its own title and description | Often searched together with the brand |
| Category + main color or material | Open to indexing if it is searched for and has enough products | There are searches such as "black leather bag" |
| Category + size | Canonical to the main category | Carries no separate search intent |
| Price range, sorting, products per page | Canonical to the main category or not indexed | Produces duplicate content |
| A combination of three or more filters | Not indexed | Produces an endless number of thin pages |

Every filter page you open to indexing should now behave like a category: it should have its own title, description and H1, and should appear in the sitemap. Parameters such as sorting and products per page should not change the URL, or if they do, they must be tied to the main page with a canonical.

## How to Write a Category Description?

A good category description consists of a short intro of one or two sentences above the product list and a more detailed text below the list that describes the category and works as a buying guide. The goal is not to stuff keywords but to help the customer make a choice.

| Section | What to write? | Length |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Top intro | What the category contains and the standout advantage (the key phrase fits in naturally) | 1–2 sentences |
| Buying guide | Product types, how to choose, which feature suits what | 2–4 paragraphs |
| Subcategory links | Links to related subcategories within the text | In the natural flow |
| Frequently asked questions | Questions about sizes, material, care, delivery and so on | 3–5 questions |

- **Write originally:** Do not copy supplier texts or descriptions from other sites; each category should carry its own text.
- **Use the customer's language:** Explain technical terms if you need them.
- **Do not overshadow the products:** Put the long description below the product list; the customer should see the products as soon as they open the page.
- **Keep it up to date:** Review the description as seasons change and new product types are added.

Tip

End the description with questions and answers

At the end of the category description, write the three or four questions most often received by customer service, with short answers. This section both makes the customer's decision easier and offers clear answers that AI assistants and search engines can quote.

## Example: Title and Description Template for a Category Page

The template below shows how the fields can be filled in for a fictional "Men's Linen Shirt" category; the texts are only examples and should be adapted to your own products and services.

| Field | Example |
| --- | --- |
| Address | /mens-linen-shirt |
| Page title | Men's Linen Shirt Styles and Prices / Store Name |
| Meta description | Short- and long-sleeve, plain and patterned men's linen shirt styles. Browse now with a size chart, easy returns and fast shipping. |
| H1 | Men's Linen Shirts |
| Top intro | Men's shirt styles in linen, the breathable fabric of summer months, suited to everyday and stylish wear. |
| Sub-description headings | How to choose a linen shirt? · Which cut suits whom? · Linen shirt care · Frequently asked questions |
| Internal links | Short-sleeve linen shirt, white linen shirt and linen trousers categories, and a linen care blog post |

## Category Pages and AI Search

Customers now ask AI assistants for product recommendations, not just search engines. These assistants compile their answers from pages that answer the question clearly and have an understandable structure. For category pages to appear in these answers:

- **Write clear definitions:** Give short, plain answers to the question "which product suits whom" in the category description.
- **Add a Q&A section:** Frequently asked questions are in a format that assistants can quote directly.
- **Keep the structure clear:** The breadcrumb, heading hierarchy and structured data make it easier for machines to understand what the page is about.
- **Summarize your site:** Files such as llms.txt are a way to introduce your important categories and pages to AI tools in one place.

## How to Measure Category Page SEO Results?

The result of category page SEO is measured by the indexing status of category pages, impressions and clicks in search results, rankings for the targeted phrases, and the conversion of organic visits from the category into sales.

- **Indexing:** In the search engines' site-owner tools, check whether category pages are in the index and whether filter URLs are entering the index unnecessarily.
- **Impressions and clicks:** For each category, compare the number of impressions and clicks in search results before and after the change.
- **Ranking:** Track each category's ranking for its main phrase regularly.
- **Sales:** Track the conversion rate of organic visits to the category and the category's sales; if traffic grows but sales do not, the page content or product selection should be reviewed.

## 8 Common Mistakes in Category Page SEO

1. **The same template title on every category:** A "Category Name | Store" pattern does not set the pages apart from one another.
2. **A category without a description:** A page made up only of a product grid does not tell the search engine what it is about.
3. **Filters generating thousands of URLs:** The search engine's crawl capacity is wasted on duplicate pages.
4. **Pointing all pagination pages to the first page:** The products on later pages cannot be discovered.
5. **Changing category URLs often:** Every change requires the accumulated value to be carried over with a redirect; if the redirect is forgotten, the value is lost.
6. **Targeting the same phrase with two categories:** The two pages compete with each other, and both fall behind.
7. **Deleting out-of-stock products:** The product URLs return errors and the rankings already earned are lost.
8. **Heavy images:** Dozens of uncompressed images slow down the category page, especially on mobile.

## Category Page SEO Checklist

Check every category page with the list below before publishing it or after editing it.

*Görsel: Category page SEO checklist: 16 items under the headings keyword, title and description, content, technical, and links (A 16-item checklist for category page SEO.)*

- **Key phrase and title:** A category-specific main phrase has been chosen; the title, meta description and single H1 all carry this phrase.
- **Content:** There is a short introduction at the top, a buying guide and frequently asked questions below; the text is original.
- **Technical:** The product list is in the source code; each pagination page carries its own canonical; filter URLs are managed; a sitemap and structured data are in place.
- **Links and performance:** There are links to subcategories and related categories, and from the blog to the category; images are resized and compressed; out-of-stock products are not deleted but move to the end of the list.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**What is category page SEO?**

Category page SEO is the work done so that the category pages of an e-commerce site rank high in product-type searches: key phrase selection, title and meta description, original category descriptions, management of filter and pagination URLs, internal links, speed and structured data.

**Do you need to write a description for a category page?**

Yes. A category page without a description consists only of a product grid and doesn't tell the search engine what it is about. It is recommended to add a short introduction above the list, and below it a more detailed description in the form of a buying guide, plus frequently asked questions.

**Should filter pages be indexed?**

Only filter combinations that are searched for on their own and have enough products (for example, category and brand) should be indexed with their own title and description. Size, price range, sorting and multi-filter combinations should be tied to the main category with a canonical tag or left out of the index.

**How should canonical work on paginated pages?**

Each of the second, third and subsequent pages should carry a canonical tag pointing to its own URL. Setting the canonical of all pages to the first page makes it harder for search engines to discover the products on later pages.

**Should out-of-stock products be removed from the category page?**

Products that are temporarily out of stock should not be deleted but moved to the end of the list; the product URL and the ranking it has earned are preserved. For products permanently withdrawn from sale, the URL should be redirected with a 301 to the closest product or to its category.

**What happens if the category URL is changed?**

If the old URL is not permanently (301) redirected to the new one, the search value the category page has built up is lost and the old URL returns an error. If possible, the category URL should not be changed; if it must change, the redirect must be set up.
