Where does an e-commerce site use QR codes?
A QR code is the bridge between a printed surface and the right page on your site: with a single scan of the phone camera, customers reach the page without typing an address. These are the places where it is most useful for a business that sells online:
| Where | QR type | What the code opens |
|---|---|---|
| Thank-you card in the shipping box | Web address | Review page or new-season category |
| Product label and user manual | Web address | Care or setup guide for the product |
| Shelf and checkout in a physical store | Web address | Page where sizes and colors not on the shelf are sold |
| Store and showroom entrance | Wi-Fi | Connecting to the guest network without typing a password |
| Trade fair stand, sales representative card | Business card | Adding the contact to the phone's address book |
| Return and exchange form | Email or SMS | A support message with the subject already written |
For businesses with both a physical store and a website, a code at the checkout is an easy way not to lose a product that is not on the shelf. If you want to manage in-store sales from the same panel as your site, take a look at the Store Sales Module.
What is written inside a QR code?
What is written inside the code is plain text; the phone looks at the format of this text to decide what to do. A web address starts with https:// and opens in the browser. A Wi-Fi code follows the WIFI:T:WPA;S:ağ adı;P:şifre;; pattern, and the phone offers to join the network. A business card uses the vCard format, a phone number starts with tel:, an SMS with SMSTO:, and an email with mailto:. The tool builds these patterns for you.
The longer the text, the denser the code. The character count and QR version in the tool show this: as the version grows, the number of squares increases and the code becomes harder to read in small print. So instead of adding a long chain of parameters to the end of a product address, choose a short, clean page address.

Choose Q if the code will be printed on a surface that wears out, H if a logo will be placed in the middle; M is enough for screens and clean paper. Error correction is backup data added so the code can still be read even if part of it is erased or covered. There are four levels: L withstands about 7% loss, M 15%, Q 25%, H 30%.
As the level rises, more squares are needed for the same text; the code is more durable but denser. Durability should come first in places like the outside of a shipping box, rubbing packaging and shop windows, while simplicity should come first on small labels.
Why doesn't my printed QR code scan?
Most codes that don't scan have one of four problems: too little color difference, a code that is too small, a cropped margin, or a mistyped address. Check the following before printing:
- Dark code, light background: You can use your brand color, but the code must stay dark and the background light. If the contrast bar in the tool gets longer, darken the color.
- Size for the reading distance: 2–3 cm is usually enough for a hand-held card; on a wall poster, make the code larger as the distance increases.
- Quiet zone: Don't crop the space around the code in your design, and don't place text or lines over it.
- SVG for the printer: SVG is vector, so it stays sharp at any size. Use PNG on screens and in presentations.
- Permanent address: A printed address may be scanned for years. Instead of a page that will close when the campaign ends, choose a permanent category or product page.
How do I measure visitors coming from a QR code?
If you add UTM parameters to the page address and turn that address into a QR code, scans appear as a separate source in Google Analytics reports. For example, for the address on a shipping card you can use utm_source=kargo-karti, utm_medium=qr. Just prepare the link with the UTM builder and paste it here.
If the code will take the customer straight to a chat instead of a page, turn the wa.me link you get from the WhatsApp link generator into a QR code of the web address type. To read more about what a QR code is, see the definition in the glossary.
