What Is File Transfer Protocol (FTP)?

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a protocol used to transfer files between computers. It is based on the TCP/IP protocol for uploading and downloading files over the internet. It allows users to connect to a server with an FTP client and transfer files. Because of security concerns, more secure alternatives such as SFTP and FTPS are also used.
